Description

This is a short section of trail that is the preferred way of accessing the Twin Sisters Saddle, a narrow rock "bridge" that connects the two mountain peaks. Despite the rather lousy condition of the trail, this is a bucket list experience, as the Twin Sisters peaks and saddle is a landmark that dominates the terrain around Silver City and being able to experience being up on the feature is a definite must should you find yourself riding the more established trails in this area of the Gila.

To access this trail, simply head southwest on the CDT toward Highway 15 and the Arrastra Site and continue past the upper trailhead of Little Cherry Creek Trail. This is easier said than done as you either need to slog up Little Cherry Creek Trail or head down the CDT from Signal Peak Trail #742. Additionally, you could ride to the CDT from trails that connect into the greater Arenas Valley. Either way, accessing this trail will make for a big day unless you can arrange for a shuttle up to the Signal Peak saddle parking area where you can access the CDT.

After you pass the upper Little Cherry Creek Trail intersection, continue on the CDT like you are headed to Highway 15. However, you'll shortly arrive at a split in the trail. Go to the left and take the steep section of doubletrack that heads up hill to an old campsite. Behind the campsite, you'll connect into the singletrack that wraps around the side of one of the peaks and drops down onto the saddle. There are several areas of deadfall as of summer, 2024 and a steep section that is basically unridable. You'll know you have reached this section because ropes have been placed to aid with climbing up and down the terrain.

It is best to stash your bike in a small opening near the bottom of the first rope and hike there remainder of the trail, as you are pretty close to the saddle at this point. Upon arrival at the saddle, take in the amazing beauty of the surrounding country as this is one of the best views in the Silver City area.

Group shots may be discouraged, but taking in the views with your mates is what this experience is all about. Unfortunately, photographs cannot begin to replicate the experience of going out onto the rock saddle.
