Overview
Dropping into the Santa Barbara backcountry is a bucket list ride for most; however most entries begin with a massive climb and usually require a long drive around the mountains. This route offers access closer to town with a stellar descent to begin the ride.
Description
This ride begins at the northern edge of Gibraltar road. Begin down the dirt road to the north and keep an eye out to the left where the road drops off the cliff. The entrance to North tunnel is obvious, from which you'll begin a long and sustained descent through wildflowers and along ridge lines. In about 2 miles, you'll hit a juncture, at which you turn right down
Devils Canyon, which adds another 1.5 miles of descending. At the terminus you'll meet Angoustoura dirt road, which will take you straight back up to the car.
History & Background
An old route used to transport water into town and haul gear out to mining camps.
