Need to Know

If you plan to park inside the Ed R. Levin County Park, there is a $6 per vehicle day-use fee.

Description

The Tularcitos Trail is easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but is a wonderful way to extend your ride in the Ed R. Levin County Park, and a far nicer option than riding on the paved access road in the main park.

In this direction, the trail starts just to the right of the gate on the Calera Creek Trail where it joins the paved road (back to the main car parking area), and is initially a singletrack on level ground across a meadow, before starting to climb on a wider two-track/vehicle width trail to the summit next to a large water tank - with nice views of the Bay Area to the west.

The trail then descends - quite steeply in places - straight down the hillside, with a couple of 90-degree corners and some exposure. On reaching the gate and crossing over Old Calaveras Road, you pass through another gate and then turn right and continue alongside the road/fence-line a short distance, before switching back hard left and climbing gradually uphill on a more narrow and undulating singletrack trail again.

The route continues straight ahead at the cross-roads junction with Airpoint Trail, and begins to descend on a wider and slightly rough trail towards Calaveras Road. Just after this initial descent and the T junction with Calaveras Ridge Trail, look for the final descent on your left - a narrow singletrack which drops steeply through the woods on a more narrow trail with some exposure, to exit next to the highway on a small gravel turn-out.

Note. This trail can be ridden in either direction, although be aware the steep portions are indeed pretty steep were you to attempt to climb them, and I'd suggest following this trail in the direction shown as a nice way to finish a longer ride on this side of the Bay.
