The Great Western Trail: Western Section traverses 18 miles from St. Charles, IL to Sycamore, IL and is constructed of crushed stone. It travels through unincorporated rural townships, natural wetlands, some restored prairies, and farmland as well as the towns of Virgil and Lily Lake. It is immediately north and parallel to Illinois Route 64 for most of the way.

The trailhead is on Dean St. about 0.5 miles west of Randall Rd, St. Charles. At Route 47, about 7.5 miles from the start is a gas station for refreshments and food.
