Description

The Hobbit trail is the backbone of the lower West Mag system. Formally known as Hobbit 1, Hobbit 2, Hobbit 3 and New 34 segments, this classic trail winds through clear cut meadows and pine forests.

Starting from the center parking head south through the meadow and aspen grove. You'll cross the road and continue on to the intersection with Re-Root #927. Hobbit heads right/west. You'll have a section through the trees, cross and road and then head into the clear cut meadow. While still twisty fun, it was once a slalom course through tight trees that rewarded precision turning and narrow handlebars. Now that the trees are missing there's a little more room for error. Once you cross the clear cut, you'll come to a steep drop into a drainage and subsequent steep climb out the other side back into the edge of the clear cut area. Cross the road and continue straight.

This section of trail could be rated as blue/black if that were an option. When riding clockwise you'll cross the road from Hobbit 1 and quickly come to a Y. The easy option heads right down past campsite 18 - the left option is a moderately steep downhill with a few jump options. Where the 2 options converge, you'll hit a short steep uphill and then some rolling singletrack fun before descending the recently rerouted section (thank you NATO) then climbing another new section (thank you BMA) to the road. Continue straight across the road.

This next section was recently rerouted by Boulder Mountainbike Alliance according to the USFS Magnolia Trails Plan to eliminate a significantly eroded fall line section and to better align with the intersection with the road. No matter which direction you enter the trail you'll have a small climb to the top and intersection of Roots and Rocks.

The next intersection is K shaped with Hobbit 3.5 (which connects to Rocks and Roots) heading west (left-most trail), Hobbit heading north (center) and old Hobbit 3 heading northeast (right-most trail). Continue on the center trail. Keep your eyes open when traveling Northbound on this trail for an approximate 40' rock slab for an upper intermediate challenge marked with an engine part.
