Overview
Rocky, rooty, twisty climb that rewards you with some views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Those views let you know that you are about to start one of the BME stages down some fast and loose, rocky terrain.
After you have white-knuckled your way down, begin the ascending mellow traverse back to where you came.
Need to Know
Parking is free in the covered structure. Many cafes and restaurants in the area, as well as bike shops if you need a rental or a tune up. Winter Park Resort has a host of activities for the family if you need to blast a hot lap.
Description
Start in the covered parking structure (free in the summer) at Winter Park Resort. Meander through the base area and warm up the legs by climbing
Turnpike, turn right at the junction to follow the covered aqueduct on
Tunnel Hill road.
Turn left onto
Upper Cherokee, if the road starts to climb you have gone too far. Turn right onto
Lower Arapahoe (if you make it to
Green World you've gone too far) and start the technical, twisty ascent.
Lower Arapahoe eventually becomes Upper
Arapahoe, and keep your eyes to the right for the turn onto
Eye to Eye. This section of
Eye to Eye goes up and down, with lots of rocks to try to make it over.
This will spit you onto
Tunnel Hill Road and you should go straight over the road to rejoin
Eye to Eye. The road marks the start of the Enduro stage. Don't let the start fool you, it only gets steeper, faster and looser as your body gets more and more tired.
Turn right onto
Ice Hill. When you hit the railroad tracks, that is where the timed segment ends. Follow the railroad tracks and stay left on
Serenity to climb all the way back to Winter Park Resort. Stay on
Serenity bearing left at the junction with
Tunnel Hill Trail and you'll end up on the
Road to Nowhere and sprint back to the base on the finishing straight of the US National XC course.
