Need to Know
The Vallée du Trient was one of the first regions in the Swiss Alps to attract foreign tourists – thanks to the "Route des Diligences" (Stagecoach Road), built between 1855 and 1861. The valley soon became internationally famous because of its scenic beauty and elegant resorts such as Finhaut, which has retained its magnificent Belle Epoque hotels. The Route des Diligences was part of the
ViaCook: the very first group tour through Switzerland, organized by the British package holiday pioneer Thomas Cook in 1863.
This trail starts out roughly following the route of the narrow-gauge Mont-Blanc Express, built from 1902 to 1906. See the
Finhaut - Émosson - Martigny route description for more info about using that scenic train to connect rides in this area, and for more info about the Émosson dam and area.
Description
The historic Route des Diligences actually runs between Vernayaz and Salvan. This mapped route extends further. Finishing at the top of the Emosson dam, it is the track of a locally famous
annual charity bicycle hill climb. But you can take the train to Finhaut and ride this trail in the other direction, if you prefer.
The Route des Diligences is well sign-posted and used by hikers as well as bikers.
