Lots of doubletrack, but a good intro to riding the forest rocks. Probably not a destination trail.

Overview

Perhaps a good ride to use as a stepping stone to some of the more technical forest trails. Most of this ride is probably intermediate/difficult, but it does contain short stints that are difficult, so I have labeled the ride as such. A good bit of the downhill at the end is a gravel road, so the payoff is somewhat robbed on this one.

The trail tends to stay wet and best done in dry weather. This one gets mixed reviews but worth doing at least once if you live close.

Description

Climb up the doubletrack of Massanutten Trail (orange blazes) where you'll pass over Middle Mountain in the area of Strickler Knob. As you climb Duncan Hollow towards Strickler Knob, you'll pass Gap Creek Trail #409 (blue blazes).

At the top of Middle Mountain, you'll descend towards Waterfall Mountain where you'll intersect Scothorn Gap Trail #555 (yellow blazes) and take a right. The next intersection will be Gap Creek Trail #409 (blue blazes). This intersection is a triangle—take the blue blaze down the mountain towards Passage Creek. After crossing the creek, turn right and take a short gravel drive to Chrisman Hollow Road where you'll take a right. Take Chrisman Hollow Road to its termination where you'll turn right and take Fort Valley Road #675 a short distance up to the start of your loop.
