Need to Know
At the top of this road is the Carson National Forest Hotshot training facility, the road is closed to public automobile access at about 0.65 miles, at which point there is a gate with signs clearly stating that only government vehicles are allowed to drive further, and ATVs are not allowed. There is space for a few vehicles to park. From here, access is open to hikers and bikes, there are signs saying please keep pets on a leash.
Description
The beginning is just outside the Carson National Forest boundary, 0.7 miles north of NM 585 along US Highway 64 (aka Kit Carson Road). Look for Piedmont Road, this is Forest Road 1. It's a gradual climb through a neighborhood and ends at an old firefighter training facility. It provides access to the
Cortado Trail #162 and routes used by SAR teams reach the
Devisadero Loop Trail #108.
