A taste of Taos' untapped logging road XC adventures.

Wheel Rider

Overview

Woodpile explores a bit of Taos' endless route-building potential. It consists of sustained climbs up decommissioned logging roads with just a soupçon of singletrack that winds through the lodgepole and mixed-conifer forests of the Northern New Mexico foothills.

After reaching Gallegos Park, open the throttle on a ripping descent through aspen groves and meadows.
Features: -none-
Dogs: Off-leash

Description

The route has lots of potential for expansion, contraction, and confusion, so make sure your GPS is juiced.

Start at the Amole XC Ski Area parking, and head northeast along the edge of the meadow across the road from the bathrooms. Follow the Ski Trail blazes for the first part of the route.

The route depicted here is the classic "Woodpile" route as envisioned by local MTB legends, but the network of old logging roads and cow-paths means you can get as creative as you dare.

History & Background

The trail is named for the massive pile of slash wood found near the end—a remnant of the logging history that made this route possible.
