Description
This is the part of Tumbling Creek Road in Georgia within Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest. The road continues into Tennessee as
Tumbling Creek Road (FS 65) within Cherokee National Forest.
The Georgia section is somewhat rougher and narrower than the Tennessee section, but it is still suitable for passenger cars. It seems to have been recently graveled, and the loose gravel makes for some rough going uphill (opposite the direction shown). Beware of gravel surfing on the way down.
Tumbling Creek flows just to the east of the road along a good portion of its length. There are lots of rapids and cascades along the way that are both visible and audible from the road. At higher elevations, there are a lot of ferns among along the forest floor. As you proceed northward into Tennessee, there are a lot of scrubby magnolia plants.
This is part of a group of forest service roads that connect the Tanasi Trail system (in Tennessee) to the Bear Creek Train system (in Georgia). The Big Frog (TN) and Cohutta (GA) Wildernesses lie just to the west of Tumbling Creek Road. At the south end,
Three Forks Road (FS 64) takes you into the heart of the Bear Creek area.
