Description

For the best experience, take a taxi ride to the village of Sevaberd, in the Kotayk province. Ride to the north end past the buildings and look for the start of the Akna Lake Road. This doubletrack heads into the Geghama Mountains across rounded hills.

Several kilometers ahead the crystal clear Akna Lake beckons from where it sits on the high plateau. The area is home to rich fragrant flowers, diverse plants, and many species of birds (especially during the fall). It's truly a place where the mountains and the sky have been mirrored in the lake for all eternity. A cemetery memorial of Yezidi people is also located near Akna Lake.

The return back to the village is an easy descent. At the bottom you can either hire a taxi or pedal to the town of Abovyan to visit the the Saint Hovhannes Mkrtich Church (8 to 10 kilometers away).

It's best to visit the area between May and October. Riders should plan for about seven hours when riding this doubletrack as an out-and-back.
