Description
Buena Vista is a great destination for mountain biking, and the trails just northeast of town stay dry and rideable practically year-round. It's hard to find a destination in Colorado that is more scenic!
Whipple Main Route provides one of the mellowest options to
CR304. While the trail steadily climbs & features a few rocky sections, it's one of the best options for anyone on a gravel bike (
South Trail is another good, albeit steeper gravel grinder option).
From the gravel lot at River Park, cross the pedestrian bridge onto
Bridge to Bridge Trail, and pedal south along the river, passing a steep predominantly hiking trail almost immediately on the left. Continue along the river. You'll begin to climb a bit & will reach a 3-way junction. Head left towards North & Whipple Trails.
After another brief climb, you'll reach the
North Trail (6030), Whipple Trail junction. Head right & continue climbing. Follow the old mining road as it continues to climb. Although it isn't the rockiest or most technical climb, one hopes it was smoother in the late 1800s when the Colorado Midland Railroad was running. Top out on
CR304, take in the views, & choose where to next. It's a well-signed trail system, so picking your route is pretty easy to do on the fly.
