The training loop offers a too-short test of your skills before you commit to one of the full loops at Ballyhoura.

Overview

The parking area requires a 5 EUR fee or annual parking pass.

Description

Just off the trailhead, the Skills Training Loop offers a taste of the riding at Ballyhoura. It's best ridden clockwise to take advantage of mostly downhills. To reach the start in that direction, riders will have to venture out a short distance on the Greenwood Loop (Green Loop) until the Skills Training Loop branches off to the right.

After that, you'll head quickly downhill through the forest with a number of tight switchbacks in short succession. There's a little bit of a tricky water crossing at the bottom around the halfway mark, and then you begin a very gentle climb back to the trail center.

The Skills Training Loop probably represents the most difficult technical features you can expect to encounter on the main trails (excepting for on Tech Loop 1 and Tech Loop 2), so unless you've had a really difficult time, you're ready for the main trails. If you do find it too difficult, or want to get to the main trails sooner, there is a bail option (Skills Training Shortcut) after the creek crossing.
