Past the historic rodeo arena and cowboy cabin, at the start of Engleman's Loop
, the Cowboy Loop starts on the right just past the wooden bridge. The sign points in the counter-clockwise direction and the ride can be done either way, but for the best views on the descent, take the left (northeast) branch for a clockwise loop.
The trail crosses Wilder Creek - a small wood bridge may or may not be in place - then follows the creek in a shaded gradual ascent. As it reaches the edge of the park boundary the trail climbs steeply out of the creek gulch to an open hilltop. This climb (or descent) is the most difficult on the loop.
The trail parallels the park boundary fence a short distance then turns south towards the ocean for a long descent through an open pasture. As you enjoy the views, watch out for the occasional cow or horse-hoof pot hole, especially where the trail gets steeper. There is one last technical section as the trail drops back down to Wilder Creek and another creek crossing that brings you to the start.
