Getting forecast...

A nice out and back that you can ride from Downtown Los Gatos, CA.

Josh Davidson

Dogs Unknown

Features -none-

Watch out for rangers with radar guns (rare). Helmets required.

Overview

A 2,200' foot fire road climb to some great views of the Bay Area and Santa Cruz/Los Gatos mountains.

Need to Know

You cannot park at the dirt start...you must climb through neighborhoods to access. You can get a speeding ticket on the descent but it's rare. You can also get a ticket for not wearing a helmet as well as for wearing headphones.

Description

There are no big walls to contend with...just a steady grind. This ride can be very hot with loose dirt in the summer - there's little in the way of shade. It's definitely more of an 'exercise ride' with a long, sustained climb to top.

A LONG climb and a dexcent that should be faster, but isn't. Rocky and pretty, but also rutty and twisty. Mostly LONG.

You can actually park closer to the trail then downtown. I parked at a stop sign near an apartment building. 9.6mi

First time doing this ride. Great out and back if you're looking to sweat a bit!

Park closes 1/2 hour after sunset. Hefty fine if you get caught by rangers. Mine was $234 in 2014. Oct 2, 2014
Tried to ride this last week and turned around due to construction going on near some water tanks and the road is closed beyond that. There are private property/no entry signs posted everywhere above Madrone Ave. as well. Feb 12, 2016
