Overview
A backcountry ride from the Forest Lea Trails parking lot that connects technical 4wd, ATV and logging roads for a big mileage loop. Many beautiful lakes and a couple of stream crossings.
Need to Know
This is a very remote ride - plan accordingly. The route is not marked but is straight forward to navigate. Bugs are bad in late spring.
Description
From the Forest Lea Trails parking lot, head out the dirt road. At the T, turn left onto the 4wd road until you drop down into Alice - about 8k. Ride the abandoned rail line to the SECOND gravel road crossing - go right on it as it parallels the old rail line. This is fast riding but gets rougher and rougher, passing some hunt camps and eventually becoming fun, technical, doubletrack then ATV trail.
When you get to where the trail is flooded by a beaver dam, go back a couple hundred meters and look for an ATV trail that does a stream crossing to avoid it. Continue bearing right at the forks to cross the stream again (mandatory wet feet). This puts you at a hunt camp. At this point you are way out there.
The ATV trail leads from the camp - follow this and at each fork you stay on the better used option. The trail gets smoother and faster and eventually leads you onto a logging road. This in turn leads you to Achray/Barron Canyon Rd. (turn right onto it). The worst part of the ride: 8k on the gravel Barron Canyon Rd. You can stay on this all the way to Portage Outfitters for some ice cream (and then return to Station Hill Rd to link to Forest Lea) but I recommend turning onto more fun tech 4wd before Barron Canyon Rd turns to pavement - a turn easy to miss, but is at the base of the last climb.
This 4wd goes in, you take the left fork, and it is more tech ATV that spits you out onto Maves Rd (still backcountry). Follow to Forest Lea Rd. and your car.
