Natural trail that is not being maintained. Only used by farmers and cattle.

Overview

A nice ride through the Sierra del Rosario, seeing some remote places of the biosphere reserve with alternating sections of singletrack and connector roads and very varying terrain. Overall, expect tricky terrain, steep climbs, rocks, natural trails and no shops or cell phone coverage, making this very challenging.

Need to Know

Very sparsely populated, very remote, no cell coverage, no shops, marabu spine plants make tubeless almost a necessity. Beware of cows with calves that can be aggressive, and careful with watch dogs around farms.

Bring enough water and food as there is no possibility to buy anything along the way. The sections at the CCM allow for an easier return in case of fatigue or problems and might make it possible to wave down a car if needed.

Description

I suggest beginning in Soroa, where you probably will be able to find accommodations. Ride up the carretera central de la montaña (CCM) until its peak. After a short descent, turn right towards las Terrazas. From there, our unpaved action starts with an ascent towards the Valdez/Minas de Buenavista along narrow, unmaintained singletrack. The descent includes leafy, rocky, and sandy terrain and sections through dense forests and palm plantations.

Return back to the CCM for a little bit before leaving the paved road again at San Blas to take a somewhat wider rough dirt road towards los Tumbos. The end is a tough ascent on challenging terrain which eventually ends up at the paved road again. Here we head back towards Soroa for a while before turning off the paved road to the right. Through forest and along singletrack you'll head towards the community el Brujito on El Brujito before heading back into the forest.

Eventually, you'll arrive at the town Frías, where you'll continue to pedal back up the road to Soroa.
