Description
This trail can be ridden in either direction, but starting on the mesa west of the airport will maximize the downhill experience. The main access for this trail will be off of the Bonita Access Road. The road is just off of Hwy-220 near the airport. A sign labelled Rio Bonito will let you know where to turn.
From there, turn right onto doubletrack before the access road begins to descend toward the river and a trail marker labelled Apache Trail will be at the beginning of the trail.
The half of the trail near the mesa is fun, fast, and a bit more on the flowy side. The lower half becomes steep, rocky, and much more technical as you descend into the canyon and cross a dry creek bed multiple times. There are even a couple of small boulder fields that will necessitate a bit of hike-a-bike.
This lower section of the Apache Trail will end at the
Rio Bonito Trail doubletrack and you can use said doubletrack as a way of connecting into other trails in this large network.
