Overview

Remote and primitive. Wilderness-like character abounds throughout the ride. This is mosquito country in the spring.

Need to Know

Within the first mile from the trailhead on Jackknife Creek Trail #448, just after the small Black Canyon bridge, follow the Jackknife sign and climb a few switchbacks instead of the trail to the left that runs along the creek. The sign directs you up the reroute and avoids thick willow bushes and sections of slumped trail along the creek.

Description

With more bicycle traffic, the ride from Jackknife Creek Trail #448 to Caribou City will become a very enjoyable backcountry trail ride to a historic destination. In its current state, wheeled travel is generally easy but the trail tread can be rough from equestrians and big game animals; as are most non-motorized trails in the Caribous. Additionally, there are many game trails that crisscross Trail Creek Trail #457 making for navigational hurdles. Expect four fords of Trail Creek. All are easy to navigate by bike except during high water in the springtime.

From Taylor Creek Divide to Caribou City, the trail offers challenging climbs and descents compared to the trail along Trail Creek, which for the most part, is gradual grade.

In reverse, Caribou City to Taylor Creek Divide will have short hike-a-bike sections between good downhill bits. From Taylor Creek to Jackknife Creek Trail #448, it's a long and fun gradual descent with a few rocky sections, a short punchy climb or two, and outstanding open scenery.
