Family Friendly Kids could ride some or all of this, especially Frosty Gap #235 and maybe Pocahontas Trail #263 to Eagle Camp, depending on their skill level.

It's a National Forest, so hunting is allowed. Check hunting dates and wear some orange to be safe.

Overview

This is a local favorite because of the fun gulley crossings and twisting turns. The singletrack is mostly downhill, especially the Pocahontas section, where you can let 'er run.

Need to Know

New bridge at end of the singletrack just before Eagle Camp parking.

Description

Drive Hwy 39/55 to Dogway Road, just West of Kennison Mtn parking lot. Park in the lot at the two locked gates and pass the Western gate to ride west on Frosty Gap #235, also called FSR 731.

Turn right in a grassy area to enter the singletrack section of Frosty Gap trail. Follow this singletrack for a mile, take a sharp left (easy to miss) onto Pocahontas Trail #263. Ride this fun, twisting singletrack for approximately two miles downhill across several gullys and rock crossings. Take a sharp right at the berm on Eagle Camp Trail #259 and follow this downhill to a creek crossing with a new bridge. Before the new bridge there was a fun wet crossing - see photo. It's possible to ride around the berm on the left to continue on Pocahontas Trail, which will cross Hwy 39 after a couple of miles, then it continues to the Pocahontas Parking Lot. For more singletrack, you can follow Pocahontas Trail out of the parking lot, across another new bridge, as per the instructions below.

To return, ride Hwy 39/55 East (turn left) uphill and up Dogway to your vehicle. Some take two vehicles and leave one at the Eagle Camp parking area. There's also the option for adventurous individuals to ride back on singletrack by turning right off of Hwy 39/55 into the Pocahontas Trail #263 parking area.

But if you're feeling up to the challenge, ride East on Hwy 39/55, two miles and turn into the Pocahontas Trail #263 parking lot. Follow trail signs to Pocahontas Trail #263, continue East on this trail, not turning right at the Fork Mountain trail sign. This is an uphill ride of about 3 miles and intersects with FSR 936. Go left and ride the grassy road to the intersection with Hwy 39/55, make a short left to Dogway.

History & Background

Dogway once was a logging town, with some interesting history. Ask locals (especially the older ones) if you want to learn more, they like to entertain with stories at the DQ in Richwood if you show an appreciate of their history.
