Description

This trail follows a short segment of the old via Julia Augusta which was built by the Romans. There are five bridges from Roman times along this trail.

You may be able to find solid red circle trail blazes along the trail, but this trail is pretty easy to follow because it follows the torrente Ponci (Ponci Creek) after the trail turns to singletrack. It's not too difficult a climb or extremely technical like some of the other trails in this area.

The via Julia Augusta begins as a dirt road. The first Roman bridge (Ponte delle Fate) after a half mile is still used for automobile traffic. You'll reach the agriturismo Valleponci (Ponci Valley Bed & Breakfast) at about one mile and here the trail becomes a singletrack.

The singletrack section is mostly through the forest and is significantly steeper than the previous section. Past the agriturismo, you'll pass a small vineyard and then shortly the second (Ponte Sordo) and third (Ponte delle Voze) Roman bridges.

Around mile two, you'll encounter a fourth Roman bridge (Ponte dell'Acqua). A fifth bridge (Ponte di Magnone) is present just off to the left of the trail about 0.1 mi before you reach the end of the singletrack at a road and a small chapel.
