Overview

Another great ride option in "The Wayne" showcasing the rugged, river valley terrain of South Eastern Ohio. Deep valleys, high ridges and filtered views of the Ohio River define this jewel of a ride.

Need to Know

If you're looking for something to eat after the ride, Newport has a couple of options. B & J's, The Jug or Station Pizza (St. Mary's WV across the bridge) are all good choices.

Description

Starting from the lower trailhead along SR 7, you'll have a technical climb for the first 0.25 mi. There are some short hike-a-bike sections but the trail quickly mellows out, flowing nicely and eventually climbing gradually up to the Ohio River Overlook. Views are best in the fall and early spring when the leaves are off the trees.

From the overlook, it's a short ride to the crossing of Sheets Run Rd (Twp Rd 22). (Note: another ride option is to follow SR 7 north to Sheets Run Rd, turn left on Sheets Run and climb the road up to the trail intersection, then continue the ride as described. If you have an extra vehicle you can even shuttle the first climb with this route.)

From the crossing of Sheets Run Rd, you'll continue about two miles through rolling terrain on the Ohio View Trail until reaching the intersection of the Jackson Run Trail. Turn left onto the Jackson Run Trail. From here, you'll begin a challenging (but rideable) climb that leads you to a high ridge. The trail follows the ridge for less than a mile and then does a big, blazing fast descent to the crossing of CR 9.

The Jackson Run Trail continues straight here, but you'll want to turn right on CR 9. The road begins flat and then climbs its way up to meet SR 260. Turn right on SR 260 and you'll see the upper trailhead for the Ohio View Trail on your right in approximately 0.1 mile.

At this point, you'll follow the Ohio View Trail its entire length back to the lower trailhead on SR 7. A little over a mile in, you'll pass the intersection of the Jackson Run Trail (that you took earlier), continue straight on the Ohio View Trail back to the finish. Enjoy!

Little undergrowth makes for great views through the woods. Hit it before the leaves fall, though, or be prepared for a slower, more technical ride.

Pretty sharp drop off be careful. The photo doesn't really do it justice though.
