NW Forest Pass required at Tumalo Falls Trailhead.

Overview

The full 26+ mile Mrazek tour is a spectacular Bend-area ride rewarding you with twice the amount of downhill vs elevation gain.

The start from Swampy Lakes Trailhead allows for a gentle, high elevation warmup before the days first downhill segment; a screamer down the South Fork trail. At the conclusion of the downhill, you'll start the ride's second phase; a continuous and challenging climb up the North Fork trail, following Tumalo Creek.

Although you'll be gaining a fair amount of elevation during the climb, the numerous large waterfalls and beauty of the trail keeps your mind off the leg burn. The final phase of the ride is the lengthy and flowy descent of the Mrazek trail.

Need to Know

Shuttle required as this featured ride highlights the most rewarding way to enjoy Mrazek trail with an additional screamer descent down the amazing South Fork trail.

Description

Starting from Swampy Lakes Trailhead, you'll head northwest on the Swampy Lakes trail, eventually joining the Lower Flagline trail briefly before splitting off onto the South Fork trail. Drop the seat for this one as you zig and zag your way down the rooty and rowdy trail.

When the trail flattens out, stay left to make your way over to Tumalo Falls area. This area is often congested with vehicles as the waterfalls are very popular. Cross the dirt road and continue along the North Fork trail. It starts out as a very wide and often congested trail, thinning as you make your way further up the climb. There are several overlooks that make for great rests and photo opportunities along the trail as you grind your way up the continuous climb. The North Fork trail ends in the nice and scenic happy valley.

From here, you'll cross the Tumalo Creek via a bridge before continuing along the start of the Mrazek trail. The first mile or so of the trail is a slight climb before topping out and starting the almost 13-mile downhill.

The Mrazek trail is a fast and unforgettably long trail with a taste of just about everything: logs, ramps, roots, to half pipes and jumps.

There are two splits in the trail; the first is unsigned and follows a very short section of loose doubletrack about half way down Mrazek, look for a fork in the trail as you'll want to take the left hand option which leads to a very fun half pipe feature for about half a mile. At the end of the feature, you'll cross the loose doubletrack again where the trail picks up on the other side of the road.

The second split comes about two-thirds of the way down Mrazek, this one, however, is signed. There is a Black Diamond option that splits from the main trail and will meet back up in ~one mile. It is a bobsled blast, not really difficult at all and more than worth it.

At the end of Mrazek, you'll be challenged with a rocky and techy section before finishing off along the mellow Tumalo Creek Trail.
