Description

The access to this trail is the same as Cliff Trail. If you want to peddle the inclines to access this trail the best way to do so is to start up the BVHD easement and go up Quick Gully. Once you reach the Junction, take a right toward the Town Overlook Bypass. Take the singletrack that splits right off the doubletrack. If you follow the doubletrack, you'll end up in the same place, but you'll have to struggle up the steep incline. Keep following the Town Overlook Bypass until it intersects with the doubletrack at a gate. Follow the singletrack straight on the left (east) side of the fence. The trail begins on the south side of "The M". Follow signs for The M Trail.

An alternative way to access this trail is to hike your bike up the power incline from the parking lot. Instead of crossing the BVHD easement start straight up toward the town overlook. When you get to the top of the hill and go through the first gate on your right. Once through the gate go left toward "the M". This alternative way is a shorter more direct route, but it much steeper.

The only reason this trail is rated as extremely difficult is because of the initial steep section. This first section consistently exceeds 20% grade with one section exceeding 35%. After this first steep section, the grade does not exceed 15% and can easily be considered intermediate. If you are uncomfortable with the first steep incline I highly recommend walking your bike down the first bit as the rest of the trail is very enjoyable. This trail could easily be made into an intermediate route with the addition of a switchback through the first section. The trail follows a gully and the meets back up with Cliff Trail. Either turn around and peddle back up The M Trail or turn right at the junction and follow Cliff Trail back up. It's probably a good idea to go back up The M Trail as Cliff trail is much steeper.

Do not try to exit this trail by going straight at the junction. The access to this trail via Cliff Road is not advised. The trail leading back to Cliff Road and Cornell Park is extremely steep even when you do not have a bike. There is a serious risk of injury if you try to exit the trail in this manner. Please play it safe and take the M Trail back to the rest of the High Trails System.
