Overview

This loop offers a technical challenge but some great views of the Salt Lake Valley from the Oquirrh Mountains. This ride is one of only a few available from the Oquirrh side of the Salt Lake Valley.

Need to Know

Small creek crossing, not maintained in the winter.

Description

The Yellow Fork loop feels remote and somewhat untraveled. This loop is great when you want some solitude away from other riders. It offers some steep grades that can be very punishing, a long downhill, some technical sections and beautiful scenery with awesome views. Popular for horses, you should expect to see some during your ride at some point.

Start at the parking area for the Yellow Fork trailhead. Take the singletrack trail that parallels Yellow Fork Canyon Road. Turn south on the Yellow Fork singletrack trail until you reach the beginning of the Yellow Fork Canyon Butterfield connector road. Turn west on the Yellow Fork singletrack trail that parallels the Yellow Fork Road. Expect some steep grades around 18% in areas toward the top of this climb. Turn right as you break out on the road again and follow that road to the top to enjoy the views.

Keep following the dirt road until you reach a sharp bend right where you'll pick up the singletrack trail down. Be careful or you'll blow right by this trail and you don't want to continue down the road as it is rocky and steep. This final section is a steep downhill with some tight turns to get your pulse up.

When you reach the top meadow with some scattered picnic tables, cross the stream to the right (it isn't deep) and head down the canyon using whichever singletrack you like best. They all go to the same parking area to complete the loop.
