Family Friendly Easy terrain, visit an old ranch and areas with ponds and running water.

Overview

A road type trail in eastern Washington scab lands. The trail offers access to several side trails, ponds, lakes, and great views of the unique scab land terrain. This area has the advantage of thawing and being accessible in early spring when other areas are still snow covered.

Need to Know

There is a seasonal stream at mile 4.2. It may not be passable in spring.

Description

North Visit:
Trail maps can be found at the main Twin Lakes parking area. Our ride started by parking along the Twin Lakes access road near a trail intersection point. In the spring, there is water on the trail and the ground can get soft. The terrain is not steep. A BLM map or the MTB Project mobile app can be helpful to follow the route.

We rode toward and past Rock Ranch, which is an old ranch barn and house that the BLM is cleaning up. We went toward Wall Lake, but the trail was overgrown and we did not continue. Access to the upper portion of Twin Lakes is made by heading south from the Rock Ranch. The trail crosses a small stream that is difficult to cross during springtime runoff. If you can cross the stream, a full loop of the trail can be made and is 9.5 miles.

South Visit:
Maps can be found at the Twin Lakes lake access point. We parked along the access road and rode into the lake area. There is a small foot bridge for crossing the lake and riding south into farm lands. There were a few people fishing at the lake. If you follow our route in the virtual tour, you'll see we did some backtracking as we were exploring alternate routes.

There is an uphill grade when riding in the south direction. Deer, moose, and cattle can be encountered. On the portion of our ride that heads west, the terrain was rough in places, water on the trail in places, and the trail was difficult to see from lack of use. Some of this trail is also rocky. Our next trip we plan to ride further north and attempt to make the full 9.5-mile loop.
