The western half of this trail (beyond the radio towers) is downhill only. Begin by taking the connector trail across the paved road from the gate near Intersection #8*.

The connector takes you to a paved road and the last 100+ yards of your ascent will be on pavement. Look for the trail on your left just before the towers. The descent starts off with a stone steps section that most riders will walk down - proceed with caution! The remainder of the descent is a steep, old-school brake-burner of a downhill with several switchbacks.

After crossing the paved road, the trail remains steep until connecting to a doubletrack section where you'll bear left and ride up a few rolling hills on your way to the Family Campground. Beyond this portion, the next section of Lost Turkey from the Family Campground to Monument road is a steep doubletrack that is rarely ridden. Most riders will want to continue on the Chappells Field - Campground Bypass to Chappells Field Trail.
