Description

This trail can be ridden in either direction. The terrain is generally downhill to the south so the ride is faster heading in that direction. This trail is more interesting than some of the old doubletrack wagon trails (see South Wagon Trail or Andorra Valley Wagon Trail) because it incorporates some rocky sections on the low ridge tops instead of only following the sandy valleys. You'll find that the higher the trail goes--and this holds true for all the trails in the Galisteo Preserve--the rockier the terrain. Not particularly technical rock riding, but just enough to add a fun element to the otherwise soft dirt trails in the area.

From the Cowboy Shack Trailhead, ride south on the doubletrack Wagon Trail towards Candid Crossing. After an arroyo crossing, veer right/uphill. Stay straight past South Wagon Trail turn (#33) to the left and past Kobe's Cutoff turn (#35) to the right. The next turn to the left (#31) is the beginning of Richard's Ramble.

As of Nov. 2015, there are 3 unmarked intersections on Richard's. Stay left at the first intersection. The little used trail to the right dead-ends at the end of a ridge called Andorra Valley Overlook. As you approach a deep arroyo, there are red marker flags indicating a trail may be built there soon. After crossing the arroyo and climbing up alongside the arroyo, stay left at the intersection of a new connector trail that could take you over to Derek's Delight.

Richard's Ramble ends at intersection (24) with Andorra Valley Wagon Trail.
