Horses, hikers, and bikers only please. There are plenty of OHV trails nearby, but this trail was designed and permitted for non-motorized use only.

Overview

This is one of the few non-motorized trails in the area. It can typically be ridden year-round as this elevation does not see a lot of snow. May get a little hot mid-day during summer, so carry plenty of water. Fantastic views of the Carson range to the west and Pine Nut range to the east. The trail was recently completed (April 2015), through the volunteer efforts of the Carson Valley Trails Association in collaboration with BLM. The trail is a multi-user singletrack and can be narrow in places with a limited line of sight. Please be respectful of other users.

Need to Know

This is a perfect ride for after work or when you only have an hour to knock out a few miles. This trail is heavily used by runners, hikers, and equestrians. Bikes, please yield to other trail users. Be nice - say hi!

Description

From US395 south of Gardnerville, NV take Pine Nut Rd East across from the 7-11. Continue straight through the new traffic circle then after a few miles bear left on Pine Nut Rd 2 before CV Fairgrounds. Continue on the paved road past the popular Ruhenstroth OHV trailhead. The road will turn to gravel at which point you still have 2 miles to go to reach the trailhead. When you arrive, you'll see a well-marked BLM trail sign on the left. There are no restrooms or other services nearby.

The singletrack trail climbs gently and circles a large knob with great views in all directions. It can be ridden both clockwise and counterclockwise. An approximate 3-mile loop starts one mile from the trailhead. You can ride the loop more than once if you want to make it a longer ride. This ride features a buff trail that meanders and climbs through typical high desert terrain (sage, pinyon pine, and juniper). If you enjoy the trails please consider volunteering for or donating to your local trails association.
