Description

Like Lindy Run Trail, the Railroad Trail connects upper and lower sections of the Loop road crossing Plantation Trail in the middle. This trail ascends from the Blackwater Falls State Park area more gradually than Lindy Run Trail so it is often used to gain access to other trails on Canaan Mountain including Plantation Trail, Pointy Knob Trail or the Allegheny Trail.

The lower side trailhead is marked only by a blaze but the trail is apparent. If ascending the Loop road out Blackwater Falls State Park, the trail can be seen on the left side of the road where it takes off at a slant on a barely perceptible old railroad grade. The trail ascends gradually through dense forest. It is mostly in good shape and beautiful to ride, but there are a few places with prolonged mud bogs. Eventually, the trail crosses the Plantation Trail. This area is a bit difficult to navigate because the junction is not clearly marked. Try to avoid turning on the Plantation and stay straight through to the other side of the Railroad trail. This begins a descent that is marked by a creek crossing near a shelter and good trail conditions on the old grade. This section of trail is highly recommended.
