Closed Late Sep to late June. Depends on snow pack and lift access on the Peak chair.

Description

After a gondola ride to the Roundhouse rivers, drop-in to the new-ish connector to the Peak Chair. This is a huge improvement as it separates riders from hikers. Take the Peak Chair to the top of Whistler and take five to enjoy the view.

The trail is accessed off of Matthew's Traverse, a rocky access road and a popular hiking route, so be polite on this section please. There is a great rock platform to stop on and watch other riders negotiate the first few chutes and corners, which are probably the most challenging sections of the track. I prefer just to drop-in and not think too much about it.

The trail is well-built and armored in this section, so one is dealing with mainly rock so predictable traction. There is a significant drop on the downhill side of the trail for the first upper section, so don't look at it or think about it. This is sensitive alpine environment, so also please be careful to use the built pull outs to avoid damaging the Alpine flora.

The views are amazing and this section is oft used in photos. The trail moves from the rocky upper section across the back of the mountain where it briefly crosses the alpine hiking trails and meets Hwy 86 (a ski run), the terrain develops into loose rock and dusty dirt amongst alpine scrub. The trail twists and turns as it loses elevation and then wraps around the shoulder of the mountain back towards the Whistler/Creekside aspect.

One then passes the old entrance to Khyber Pass, which is best ignored and traverses next to Hwy 86 as it moves into the next section. Jumps, rolls, doubles and tight, loose, descending hairpin bends are the features of this section. It will be very dusty and loose in the middle of summer.

It then runs down the alpine access road (Hwy 86) for a bit until it dives into the woods for another jump, pump, root and rock section with some fantastic options and some lovely tight descending corners. Finally, it pops out onto the last steep section of Hwy 86 for about 800 meters of high speed madness (beware of straying off the gravel road as there are hidden log covering for the many drainage streams) and then meets the bike park just above the No Joke/Freight Train tunnel (bottom of Upper Franz's if you are a winter visitor). With the expansion of the Creekside Zone riders can cutoff onto Midgard shortly before the end of Top of the World.
