The fence along this trail used to have a gate or barb wire, then a cattle guard. Due to an incident where a cow got stuck in the guard, both have been removed at this time. Be aware either the barb wire or a new cattle guard could be installed at anytime. Please approach with caution.

Description

North Porcupine starts at the end of South Porcupine and the junction of Christmas Tree. It heads north to the end of the Outie Trail, (at the Chicken Coop, see photo).

Along the way you'll find easy to moderate short, punchy climbs depending on your skill level. At times the tread is loose and rocky but the majority of the tread is smooth grippy soil. The only official trail off of North Porcupine is Innie, which is on the right about a 100 yards after you cross through a barb wire fence,
Shortly after Innie you have the option of taking a singletrack off to the left or staying on the doubletrack. Both meet up again shortly down the trail. The doubletrack tends to be very bumpy from cattle, so the singletrack is the preferred direction of travel.

Most people ride North Porcupine as an out and back, though you can take Innie to Outie, and come back on North Porcupine or once to the end, one can make their way to Buckhorn Trail (which is off Outie). Buckhorn will take you to the Rio Grande Trail. You can then either get to Basalt or Carbondale, via pavement.
