This trail is one of several that connect the Beartree Campground to Iron Mountain Trail
. Like most of the other connectors, it is approximately one mile. It starts at Shaw Gap on the IMT (3570 ft.) and descends a wide trail/old road that descends very quickly to Beartree Campground (~3100 ft.).
At the top of the trail, there is a fork where Beartree Gap
Trail heads right, and Shaw Gap Trail stays left. Shaw gap is not as rough or as wet as Beech Grove
, and it is very fast. Be alert for obstructed sight lines from encroaching rhododendron. When arriving at the campground, taking a left and then the first right will take you to the main road, Beartree Gap
