This trail is one of several that connect the Beartree Campground to Iron Mountain Trail. Like most of the other connectors, it is approximately one mile. It starts at Shaw Gap on the IMT (3570 ft.) and descends a wide trail/old road that descends very quickly to Beartree Campground (~3100 ft.).
At the top of the trail, there is a fork where Beartree Gap Trail heads right, and Shaw Gap Trail stays left. Shaw gap is not as rough or as wet as Beech Grove, and it is very fast. Be alert for obstructed sight lines from encroaching rhododendron. When arriving at the campground, taking a left and then the first right will take you to the main road, Beartree Gap Rd.
