Challenging singletrack trails in the heart of Richmond, Virginia

Rob Tompkins

Overview

Closed from sundown to sunup and for 24 hours following rain of 1 inch or more
A collection of several trails including Buttermilk East, Buttermilk Heights, North Bank Trail, Dogwood Dell Loop, and Belle Isle.

Need to Know

Pay attention to the open/closed signs at the trailhead and keep in mind it is a public park that features two way traffic of both bikes and walkers. Also, look for trail user information at kiosk throughout the park.

Description

Dogwood Dell Loop and Forest Hill Park are flowy, smooth, fast courses to test your cornering, pumping, and berm abilities. North Bank Trail and Buttermilk East are your traditional MTB trails with rock gardens, run ups, and stream crossings. Last but not least, Belle Isle features a variety of trails from a gravel track around the island to a skills park featuring rock gardens and a pump track.

This trail is generally ridden from the Reedy Creek parking lot off of River Road or the parking lot off of Pump Road behind the nickel bridge.

It can be ridden both clockwise and counter-clockwise. Keep an eye out for opposing traffic.

Getting forecast...

For those reading, the "Featured Ride" rides the north bank trail three times. Aug 5, 2013

I just now noticed that (thanks to your post)! FYI I parked at Reedy Creek, rode Buttermilk eastward, did a lot of sightseeing on Bell Island, came back North Bank, finished Buttermilk. then did Forest Hill, and got in 16.75 miles according to my wheel-driven computer. Great trails BTW! Aug 27, 2014

I was visiting Farmville, VA and drove here just to ride this trail. I was not disappointed! I spent more time sightseeing than riding. Belle Island reminded me of a Norman Rockwell painting, with crowds of people engaged in various activities -- rock climbing, boating, swimming, sunbathing, and of course bicycling. The old power generation stuff and the quarry are neat. The skills course was fun. It was the first time I have ever been able to make a pump track work. Hit it hard and fast, and just pump your way around! Enjoy it and don't think too hard about what to do, and you'll do it. North Bank and Buttermilk, especially the part West of Reedy Creek, was the most difficult trail I have ever ridden (ok, walked :) ). But so much fun. I can't wait to come back and spend time working on some of the more difficult sections. Forest Park is more like the trails that I am used to here in N Georgia Piedmont area. Very enjoyable also. I want to thank the folks that build and maintain the trail, and for the hospitality of the other bikers I met. One kind soul went out of his way to escort me to the next trailhead. Aug 27, 2014
