Overview
Description
You can start this ride by parking off the Sunspot Highway on a Rim Access trailhead near where Russia Canyon Road intersects the paved highway. While you can ride this loop in any direction, making a counterclockwise loop will ensure you have an amazing downhill experience on
Lucas Canyon Trail.
Begin by accessing the
Rim Trail (T105) and follow it south. Continue on the
Rim Trail (T105) past
Karr Canyon Road (FR63), until you intersect
Alamo Lookout Road (FR64D). Turn onto the road and take it back to the Sunspot Highway. Cross the highway and prepare for a bit of a grind up Benson Ridge Road. Benson Ridge is a classical forest service access road but should be fairly tame to grind up on a bike.
Get off Benson Ridge Road at the
Lucas Canyon Trail trailhead. At this point, prepare for a fast, technical and occasionally wet/muddy descent down to Russia Canyon Road. This is generally considered the apotheosis of the ride and where you cash in all the climbing for some fun.
At the bottom of the trail, hop on Russia Canyon Road and grind your way back up to where you parked. While not technical, Russia Canyon Road is all dirt has some open areas with great scenery and with any luck, you may even come across deer or elk.
