Need to Know
The Upper and Lower Pinal Peak Campgrounds have vault toilets, as does the CCC recreation site at the bottom of the trail. Topo Joe's in Globe offers a van shuttle to take riders to this or any other downhill trail in the Pinal Mountains.
Description
This trail is wider and gentler than most of the trails in the Pinal Mountain system, but its rocky surface will still test riders' judgment and finesse. Like most of the Pinal trails, it is open in both directions but most often ridden downhill. You'll cross two fence gates; please close them when you are done, as this area is used for cattle grazing.
From its southern terminus on FR 651, the Kellner Canyon Trail winds down steep, narrow singletrack with frequent rock steps to join the old roadbed at the canyon bottom. You'll find some old mining machinery by the creek, which usually flows during the cool season. After leaving the creek, it traverses across the north face of the Pinal Mountains, giving the rider an expansive view of the city of Globe and the mountains to the north. Though this section of the trail is wide with a gentle grade, it is loose and rocky and may become overgrown with New Mexico locust. It ultimately connects to the Icehouse Trail, which leads back down to the CCC Trailhead.
