Description
Rattus Maximus to
Rat Trap is a fun and approachable loop that links two of the best trails in the Ridgway Area Trails (RAT) system. Starting from the main trailhead, the route quickly gets you onto smooth, well-built singletrack with a steady rhythm and great flow.
The ride typically begins with a gradual climb on
Rattus Maximus, where the trail winds through rolling terrain with a mix of berms, small features, and short punchy sections. It's never overly technical, but there's enough variety to keep things engaging as you work your way up.
From there, the route transitions into
Rat Trap, which delivers a fast and fun descent with plenty of flow. Expect sweeping turns, playful rollers, and sections where you can carry speed without needing to commit to anything overly technical. More advanced riders will find opportunities to push the pace, while less experienced riders can take it at their own speed and still enjoy the ride.
This loop works well for riders of most abilities. Beginners with some fitness and basic technical skills should be able to ride most of the route, with only occasional short walk sections if needed. Intermediate and advanced riders will appreciate how fun and efficient the trail design is, making it a great option for a quick lap or a warm-up ride.
Overall, this is a great introduction to the RAT trail system - fun, flowy, and easy to navigate, with just enough challenge to keep it interesting from start to finish.
History & Background
The Ridgway Area Trails (RAT) system is a relatively new, purpose-built network just outside Ridgway, Colorado, developed through a partnership between the RAT organization, the Town of Ridgway, and the Bureau of Land Management. Designed with mountain biking in mind, the trails are largely machine-built for flow, sustainability, and accessibility, making the area one of the fastest-growing riding zones in Western Colorado.
