Family Friendly
This is the easiest route to Bear Swamp Hill. This is the access built by the CCC
None, no internet
Overview
This Trail is what is left of an old single-lane CCC road bed. The CCC trail was the access road to the wooden fire tower, also built in 1930. The trail was even blacktopped when a newer tower was built in the 1950s. Of course, when the plane crash destroyed the tower, the road fell into disrepair. What is left is kinda of a "rails to trails" sort of pathway.
Need to Know
No facilities, at best spotty internet.
Description
The recommended family-friendly way to
Bear Swamp Hill. The trail is maintained by the Park Service and is a hard-packed surface. Follow
Jenkins Road east to the
Chatsworth Road. Proceed north to the
Sooy Road. The access road to the hilltop is a short distance on the left. For a family-friendly outing, it may be best to hike up the rest of the Hill (part of the trail is washed out).
History & Background
At 160 feet, this is the second-highest point in South Jersey. In the autumn, there are good vistas looking over the pigny pines.
