Wide track on an old abandoned single lane dirt lane with large puddles, with a 160-foot climb.

Description

The trail follows Penn Place Road to Cabin Road to Sooy Road, and finally to Bear Swamp Hill. This is the fun, hard way to get to Bear Swamp Hill. In the 1930s, the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps, built a better access road, which still exists today as a more family-friendly wide track to get to Bear Swamp Hill. The Forest Service maintains the CCC access.

That said, the sand, puddles, branches, and mogles of this Trail via Penn Pl. is a fun mountain bike ride.

History & Background

A hundred fifty years ago this was the access road to Penn Place, latter it was the access road to the Fire Tower. The Tower was destroyed in a plane accident in 1971.
