Need to Know
Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and Campground is open all year round. Water is available May 1 to September 30. The Park is south facing, and the trails often remain snow free later in the fall, and dry out faster in the Spring compared to other riding areas.
The Park is located on Montana Hwy 2, 15 miles east of Whitehall or 19 miles west of Three Forks.
Description
Trail connects the
Limespur Fishing Access Trail,
Cave Gulch and
Eastside Trail together, not far above the campground. It means that doing complete trail loops is possible, without needing to descend back down to a road. Most people will find the idea of doing more than 1 loop in the Park pretty daunting, however this trail also increases your access options, and can also be used to do a short "campground loop".
The western half of this trail between the Fishing Access Trail and the
Amphitheater Trail is fairly easy and non-technical and might make a great little loop for kids. It is similar terrain to the
Limespur Fishing Access Trail.
The eastern half of the trail between the Amphitheatre and the Park Access Road, has some steep and pumpy ups-and-downs with some rocky technical features. The terrain is more similar to that of the
Eastside Trail, and is a good warmup if you are thinking about heading up that way.
