Garrity Mountain Trail passes through the Garrity Mountain Wildlife Management Area to the south of Garrity Mountain. The WMA is closed to all public access from Dec 1 - May 15 each year for wildlife winter range. Outside of this, a Montana Conservation License is required to access all WMAs

Overview

The Garrity Grunt is a moderately difficult mixed terrain route that circumnavigates Garrity Mountain (elev. 8045ft). About 2/3 of the route is on motorized gravel roads, and 1/3 is on a non-motorized trail through the Garrity Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Although the route can be ridden in either direction, it is recommended to ride it counter clockwise so that you descend down Garrity Mountain Trail.

Description

The route has you starting at a large empty gravel parking area beside MT-1. From here you should be able to stay on the gravel on the south side of the highway and connect onto Lime Spur Rd. After 2.5 miles Lime Spur Rd will end and without even getting on the Highway you should be able to take a left onto Kanduch Rd, followed by 2 lefts onto an un-named gravel road. About 2 miles up this gravel road there will be a junction where you turn left onto another gravel road. Another 2 miles up there will be another intersection where you keep to the right and just past this there is a parking area at the WMA boundary.

The ride through the WMA is very mixed, and it starts off on an easy doubletrack trail through the trees. Eventually the trail narrows against the side of Garrity Mountain and becomes steeper and more rocky. About halfway down the steeper part of the trail, at around the time you are starting to get views to the East down the Anaconda valley, there is a fork in the trail where you have a choice on which way to go. This route follows the easier way to the right. For a steeper and faster alternative you can turn left down the Garrity Mountain Variation. Both ways take you down to Stumptown Road, which will lead you back to MT-1.

At MT-1, you can cross over and continue on to Phillips Lane and then left onto North Cable Road. North Cable Road can be followed all the way until you are opposite your starting point on the opposite side of the highway.
