Overview
This route takes the
Soldier's Trail clockwise and adds the
Highland Trail counterclockwise for a somewhat challenging, occasionally rocky nine mile loop. The route passes near the Fort Tuthill bike park where a side trip can provide extra fun. The route is conveniently located just outside Flagstaff and just off of I-17.
Need to Know
Access to the park is free and convenient to I-17.
Description
The best parking is in the lot on the right just after entering the park from the I-17 exit. The
Soldier's Trail crosses the road just to the west of the parking, and the route begins by heading south.
After a short descent and a stiff, but rideable, ascent, the trail intersects the
Highland Trail and the
Bridge Trail. The route turns left to follow the
Highland Trail. After a short distance, the trail splits into a loop and the route turns right to follow the loop counter-clockwise.
The
Highland Trail makes a Jalapeno-shaped loop that is considerably rockier than the
Soldier's Trail, and includes a steep downhill section to connect to Highway 89A. A continuation of the
Highland Trail continues south across the highway while this route loops back to the north. After a brief steep, rocky ascent, the loop is completed and the route turns back to the north to return to the
Soldier's Trail.
Continuing on the
Soldier's Trail, the route goes north, then south, the north again. Along the way, there is a turnoff for a possible side-trip to the Fort Tuthill Bike Park.
The route continues around the north and east edges of the Fort Tuthill park until returning to the start, near the parking area.
