Overview

This loop combines the new Bonanza, Candy, and Rattler trails (3 trails connected end-to-end) with older Storm Trails area trails, connected with the easy Peavine Trail and Iron King Trail. The views near the top of the loop are spectacular.

Need to Know

The starting point is a few miles from any of the local trailheads via easy bike trails.

Description

The route starts at the old railroad car on the Iron King Trail about 1 mile east of the Peavine Trail junction. The Bonanza trail starts smoothly, but then begins to climb up through the decomposed granite of the Dells, with many switchbacks enroute to the high point.

There is a short loop at the top (Candy Trail) and then a steep descent down many short, rocky switchbacks (Rattler Trail) eventually leveling off and leading to a junction with the Bedrock City Trail of the Storm Trails area. (There are no signs indicating where the Bonanza becomes the Candy and where the Candy becomes the Rattler. They may as well be one trail.)

Once in the Storm trails area, the route follows the Bedrock City Trail, the Blaster Trail and the Northwest Passage Trail until coming out onto the easy Peavine Trail. A couple of miles on the Peavine Trail and the Iron King Trail will lead back to the staring point.

The starting point is not at a trailhead, but can be reached from any of 4 or more trailheads via the easy Peavine Trail and/or the Iron King Trail. There is a bike rack at the starting point for those who wish to hike the loop.
