Description
Complete the stunning 'Telephone Line Trail' by riding through the mulga shrublands before reaching a lookout point halfway. Admire the view before passing some granite outcropping and looping back to the end of the airstrip. Check at the homestead for directions/conditions.
The Telephone Line Trail is a 20 km (or 10 km) ride on Wooleen Station in the Shire of Murchison. It is a 20 km trail if you choose to hike/cycle from the homestead. There is an alternative start/finish point at the end of the airstrip that reduces the distance to 10 km.
In 1898 the next-door station Murgoo had a telephone line from Yalgoo, and by 1918 it arrived at Wooleen. It was a party line, which meant that many people along the way could (and did) listen in. It remained in operation until 1985. The remains of this telephone line can be seen as you traverse the first half of this trail after leaving the large airstrip. Keep your eyes trained for wire on the ground, large posts (standing and fallen over) and ceramic insulators.
At the half way point you can leave your ride up a stony hill to admire the view. Afterwards, follow the path and wind amongst some beautiful granite before traveling through the mulga shrubs back to the large airstrip.
Check-in at the homestead before departure to ensure the track condition is suitable.
