Need to Know
State Park day use fees ($6 per car) do apply, unless you have an annual state park pass. This park gets a LOT of traffic, especially in the summers. Check their website before you drive out to reserve a day pass if it's during the busy season.
Description
The state park describes this trail as a rugged trail that takes you to the highest elevation on the trail system.
Leave the parking area on the Lake Trail and you'll quickly encounter the first of several of the gneiss rock outcroppings.
Luckily, these sections aren't terribly long, in case you're riding with a buddy who's not comfortable, it's a quick hike-a-bike over and you're going again.
In about 0.2 miles, staying left, you'll be on Pecan Flats. Cross over Park Road 4 and you'll encounter primitive camping, vault toilets and doubletrack. Continue following trail signs (yellow circles), staying to the right, and you'll top the Overlook area where you'll see great views of the park and the Colorado River. There's additional mileage that can be added by using the connector trail to Woodland Trail.
