Description
This route reminds me a lot of the Fools Gold race route located near Dahlonega, GA. It's the little, middle-Georgia version.
Beginning, after crossing a bridge and turning left, with 15-20 minutes of pretty substantially gravel road climbing, the route turns left into an hour or so of singletrack. There are four creek crossings, but three of them have rideable bridges and the fourth, White Creek, has a wooden footbridge that you can walk your bike across.
Two climbs, the one north from White Creek, and also
Boomerang Trail out of the Ocmulgee basin, are both pretty substantial and will get your heart rate up. But nothing on this loop is super technical. It takes about 1.5 hrs at a good pace of 11 mph.
History & Background
The Piedmont Wildlife Refuge and the Oconee National Forest were created in the first half of the 20th century from land abandoned by farmers after the boll weevil and depression drove them out of business. This is the biggest chunk of public land south of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia.
