Overview

This route is a fun and scenic cruise through the hills between Ajo Peak and Black Mountain, with a great, slight-downhill warm-up and rollers on the way back north.

Need to Know

Several great cafes in Ajo, check their websites for hours and locations.

Description

There are many options for starting out this ride - locals will just ride out Alley Road / Scenic Loop from Ajo. The key is to catch Felt That or Valentine Well to Matt's Loop: East down to Lagarto. If you have a fatbike, you can take the wash down Fattie's Delight to the northern extent of Lagarto.

From Matt's Loop: East, head north up the west side of Lagarto and back south down the east side. There are also several options to exit Lagarto: (1) follow Lagarto all the way back to Matt's Loop: East, (2) cut off a bit early on Lagarto SE (displayed on this route example), or (3) take the earlier cutoff of Lagarto E.

Once on Bates Well Road, there are many options back to the start, including the Monopoly Railroad trails - Locomotive Rock to the B&O is a local favorite.

History & Background

There appears to be some old copper mine activity on Matt's Loop: East just before getting to Bates Well Road. Check the local Ajo Historical Museum in Ajo for more historical information about the area.
