Need to Know

Adds a bit of appeal to this campground option if you're riding the South Boundary Trail and others in the area. The Carson National Forest website lists the Capulin Campground as $10 nightly, with seasonal opening on May 24th.

The Shadow Mountain Road (Capulin FSR #10) about 0.3 miles west along the highway provides access to the Capulin loop trails and North Boundary Trail #495, the Mondragon Trail #660 and Forest Road 437 are about six miles east.

Description

This old road grade starts at the Capulin Campground on US Highway 64 east of Taos. Ride through the campground about 0.25 miles then follow the trail southwards up a drainage. The "ice cave" is at the top - not so much a cave as an overhanging block of bedrock protruding from the mountainsides - a small creek flowing over the rock freezes during winter creating some colorful ice formations, and a small waterfall during spring as the snow melts.
