SWEET singletrack arguably better than the lift-riding at China Peak.

Overview

~Two-hour loop with climbing split 1/3 and 2/3. Great singletrack downhill into Lakeshore and then an easy climb back up the old abandoned Midge Creek Road.

Description

Drive up the road towards Mono Hot Springs and leave the car at the Twin Lakes trailhead / Badger Flat trailhead. Steel yourself for ~10 mins of steep switchback climbing up the trail across from the parking lot but after that it's a gradual rolling traverse along the California Riding and Hiking Trail until it crests at a well sign-posted junction with Potter Creek Trail off to the left.

Potter Creek Trail is well-marked and ridden - getting less steep as the ride goes on, and I saw a bear here when I rode it at dusk, so there's that. There's three stream crossings.

The trail spits out in some of the ski condos above Lakeshore and it's an easy ride down to the bottom past the fire station, then left back towards the road to where you left the car.

About two miles from the fire station on the way back up the road, just after the big left-hand bend look for a small, overgrown cutting on the right, this is the end of the abandoned Midge Creek Road, it's muddy for the first 20 yards and then it's broken pavement all the way back up the where you left the car.

Nice ride but I think we were the first of the season. Signs on top of the loop and down will lead towards Huntington Lake, stay north of the creek — 10h 20m
